About Us

EPHLA is the leading choice for Ethiopian laboratory excellence

The Ethiopian Public Health Laboratory Association (EPHLA) is a non-for-profit membership-based Association established to contribute toward the national effort of promoting high-quality laboratory standards. We guarantee efficient and evidence-based diagnosis, treatment, and disease prevention through rigorous professional standards. Established in 2006 and restructured in 2009, we serve as an inclusive platform for laboratory scientists and biomedical researchers.

Five-Years Strategic Priorities of EPHLA

In addressing the current challenges and opportunities facing the public health laboratory sector in Ethiopia, and realizing its vision, mission, and objectives, the following five key strategies are proposed:

  • Build and expand organizational capacity
  • Engage members, and build and tap their capabilities
  • Establish and strengthen linkages and collaborations
  • Build and disseminate knowledge
  • Advocate and educate public health lab issues

FAQ

01. Who is eligible to join EPHLA?
EPHLA is an inclusive professional association. Membership is open to public health laboratory professionals, laboratory scientists, and researchers in both the biomedical and medical fields. We also welcome other interested individual professionals and institutions/organizations committed to advancing laboratory standards in Ethiopia.
02. How does EPHLA contribute to the quality of Ethiopia’s laboratory system?

We implement comprehensive capacity-building programs, such as "Capacity Development and Support to the Ethiopian Public Health Laboratory System." Our work includes providing short-term in-service training on topics like laboratory management, biosafety, and malaria microscopy, as well as developing standardized laboratory teaching manuals for higher education institutions.
03. Is EPHLA a government entity or an independent association?
EPHLA is a non-for-profit, membership-based professional association. While we work in close collaboration with the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI), Regional Health Bureaus, and international partners like the CDC, we are an independent organization restructured under the Charities and Societies Proclamation No. 12/2009.
