Project Objective:
The objective of the HIV Laboratory Improvement Project, in partnership with the Ethiopian Public Health Association (EPHA), is to enhance the quality and efficiency of HIV laboratory services in Ethiopia. The project aims to strengthen laboratory capacity, ensure accurate and timely diagnosis, improve monitoring of HIV treatment, and support the overall management of HIV programs.

EPHLA Responsibilities and Activities:
Capacity Building
- Organize and conduct training programs for laboratory professionals on HIV testing methodologies, quality assurance, and laboratory management.
- Develop training materials and curricula tailored to the specific needs of HIV laboratory staff.
- Collaborate with partners to facilitate external quality assessment (EQA) programs and proficiency testing for HIV laboratories.
Quality Assurance
- Implement and promote national and international quality control guidelines and standards for HIV testing.
- Conduct regular assessments and audits of HIV laboratories to identify areas for improvement and ensure compliance with quality standards.
- Provide technical support to laboratories to establish and maintain quality management systems.
Laboratory Network Strengthening:
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to establish and strengthen laboratory networks for HIV testing and monitoring.
- Facilitate the coordination and communication among laboratories within the network.
- Support the development and implementation of standardized protocols and procedures across the network.
Data Management:
- Assist in implementing and utilizing laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for efficient data capture, analysis, and reporting.
- Provide training and support to laboratory staff on data management and reporting requirements.
- Collaborate with national programs and partners to ensure data integration and interoperability between HIV laboratories and other health information systems.
Research and Development:
- Support research activities aimed at improving HIV laboratory diagnostics, monitoring, and treatment strategies.
- Facilitate disseminating and utilizing research findings to guide evidence-based practices in HIV laboratory services.
Collaboration and Partnership:
- Partner with national and international organizations in HIV diagnostics and treatment to leverage resources and expertise.
- Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to advocate for policy changes and resource mobilization to support HIV laboratory improvement efforts.
As a key implementing partner, EPHLA will actively contribute to achieving the project’s objectives through its responsibilities and activities in capacity building, quality assurance, laboratory network strengthening, data management, research and development, and collaboration with partners.
