Funder: Project HOPE Ethiopia-HSA
General Objective:
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global health and economic threat. Countries like Ethiopia are facing disproportionate impacts due to weaker health systems, limited surveillance, and inequitable access to quality diagnostics and medicines.
Strengthen Microbiology Laboratory Services
The Health Security Activity (HSA), a five-year U.S. Department of State–funded initiative implemented by Project HOPE Ethiopia with partners including the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) and the Ethiopian Public Health Laboratory Association (EPHLA) starting from October 1,2025, targets these weaknesses by building One Health surveillance, diagnostic, and workforce capacities in Amhara, Afar, and Tigray region. Within this framework, EPHLA leads Intermediate Result 2 (subnational AMR diagnostic capacity strengthening) in Dubti General Hospital Afar, Lemlem Karl General Hospital (LKGH), Maychew, and Aksum University Comprehensive Specialized Hospital (AUCSH), Aksum, aligning site-level work with national AMR and laboratory quality strategies.
General Objective
To strengthen antimicrobial resistance (AMR) diagnostic capacity and laboratory quality systems in selected health facilities by improving microbiology laboratory services, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST), and AMR surveillance in alignment with national laboratory and AMR strategies.
Specific Objectives
- To strengthen microbiology laboratory capacity in selected AMR sites through technical support, training, and provision of standardized procedures for AMR testing.
- To improve the quality of antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST) by implementing laboratory quality management systems and standardized diagnostic practices.
- To enhance AMR surveillance and reporting systems by strengthening laboratory-based data collection, analysis, and reporting mechanisms linked with national surveillance systems.
- To build the capacity of laboratory professionals through training, mentorship, and supportive supervision on microbiological techniques and quality assurance practices.
- To support coordination and collaboration among partners involved in AMR prevention, detection, and response within the Health Security Activity framework.
